Foxes, hedgehogs, and attentional capture

چکیده
Isaiah Berlin famously suggested that thinkers can be characterized into two groups, foxes and hedgehogs. Foxes multiply ideas, hedgehogs stretch them. Hedgehoggy thinking, based around core universal principles, has historically dominated capture research is prominent in Luck, S. J., Gaspelin, N., Folk, C. L., Remington, R. W., & Theeuwes, J. (2021. Progress toward resolving the attentional debate. Visual Cognition, 29(1), 1–21. https://doi.org/10.1080/13506285.2020.1848949). However, results increasingly suggest control complicated messy. There a need for careful identification of neural bases development incremental, contextual theory, i.e. there foxy thinking.

When and Why Do Hedgehogs and Foxes Differ?
Philip E. Tetlock's finding that "hedgehog" experts (those with one big theory) are worse predictors than "foxes" (those with multiple, less comprehensive theories) offers fertile ground for future research. Are experts as likely to exhibit hedgehog- or fox-like tendencies in areas that call for explanatory, diagnostic, and skill-based expertise-as they did when Tetlock called on experts to mak...
متن کاملHedgehogs, Foxes, and the Evolving Social Contract in Psychological Science: Ethical Challenges and Methodological Opportunities
This article is addressed primarily to new researchers who feel burdened by an expanding body of ethical rules and regulations. Moral dilemmas proliferate as researchers try to strike a balance between ethical accountability and the technical demands of scientific practices. The challenge is to expand existing knowledge and abide by an evolving social contract that is responsive to current ethi...
متن کاملAttentional capture and inattentional blindness.
Although we intuitively believe that salient or distinctive objects will capture our attention, surprisingly often they do not. For example, drivers may fail to notice another car when trying to turn or a person may fail to see a friend in a cinema when looking for an empty seat, even if the friend is waving. The study of attentional capture has focused primarily on measuring the effect of an i...
متن کاملAttentional window and attentional capture 1 THE SIZE OF AN ATTENTIONAL WINDOW MODULATES ATTENTIONAL CAPTURE BY COLOR SINGLETONS
It has been proposed that during visual search a color singleton cannot capture attention in a bottom-up fashion (Jonides & Yantis, 1988). In the present study we manipulated the size of the attentional window by asking participants to detect either a global (diffuse attention) or a local shape (focused attention) before starting the search for a non-singleton target. We demonstrate that increa...
متن کاملValue-driven attentional capture.
Attention selects which aspects of sensory input are brought to awareness. To promote survival and well-being, attention prioritizes stimuli both voluntarily, according to context-specific goals (e.g., searching for car keys), and involuntarily, through attentional capture driven by physical salience (e.g., looking toward a sudden noise). Valuable stimuli strongly modulate voluntary attention a...
